ST ANNE’S JUNIOR SCHOOL

School Prospectus
2007/2008
Dear Parents and Carers,
On behalf of everyone in the school we would like to welcome you to St. Anne’s Junior School. We hope that you find this prospectus useful and informative, but if you have any unanswered questions after reading though please do not hesitate to contact us.
At St. Anne’s Junior School we believe that the education of your child is a partnership between home and school but that the home/school partnership can only be truly effective with support and commitment from the whole school community and a shared understanding of the aims and the ethos of the school. To this end when your child joins our school you will be asked to sign our Home/School agreement which identifies the responsibilities we all share in order to help your child to succeed.
We provide a wide range of extra-curricular activities at school and offer residential camps for children in Year 4 and 6. There are a number of clubs and activities available to children throughout the year as well as violin and trumpet lessons through the Bristol Schools’ Music Service.
The school Christmas production is a highlight of the year which gives children the opportunity to show off their talents. A range of sporting activities are available, some of which involve competitions against other local schools.
In all aspects of school life we aim for high standards and expect excellent and responsible behaviour from all children.
We look forward to a long, happy and successful association with you and your child over the coming years.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs. Lynne Pike Mrs. Sue McIndoe

We have simple school rules which have been formulated with the pupils:
Always walk sensibly and quietly in the school buildings
Respect each other and all property
Do as you’re asked first time
Speak and act kindly
Always do your best and take responsibility
Our policy is based on the premise that we are all responsible for our own actions. Children are openly praised and thanked for actions and words that show their respect for those around them. Children who ‘break’ the rule are helped, through discussion, to accept responsibility and to decide how they will act differently next time in the same situation. Sanctions are few and in the rare case of persistent unacceptable behaviour, children are asked to form personal agreements to change behaviour and we would seek parents/carers’ support in this.
Admissions
Children are admitted to the school in the September following their 7th birthday. All children will be allocated a place provided the admission level for the year group is not exceeded. If the level is exceeded the decision as to which children will be admitted rests with Bristol’s Education Committee.
Children in other year groups can be admitted to the school if there are available places.
Disabled access to the school is available through the main entrance, with a suitably designed toilet in the building. All rooms for children have level access. A hearing loop is available from the main school entrance to the school office.
St. Anne’s Infant School Liaison
The majority of our pupils transfer into Year 3 from St. Anne’s Infant school with whom we share the site. As well as regular liaison between the schools, we have a detailed induction programme to ensure that children enjoy a smooth and happy start to their junior education. Parents and Carers of Year 2 children are invited to a meeting in Term 6. Pupils who are due to join us in year 3 from other schools are also invited to take part in the transition visits in order to prepare them for their new school.
Class Organisation
Our classes are organised as follows:
Years 3 and 4 - 3 mixed age parallel classes
Years 5 and 6 - 3 mixed age parallel classes
Our policy of having mixed age parallel classes has the following benefits:
- we are able to keep our class organisation constant from year to year.
- we are able to plan a long-term curriculum which ensures continuity and progression for the children
- class teachers are able to spend more time planning detailed work for individual children and groups of children in their classes as less time is spent on long-term planning
- class teachers plan work in teaching teams, drawing on each others’ expertise and strengths
- we are able to vary teaching groups in order to offer specialist teaching (e.g. music, art, PE) or to ability group children for basic skills work.

Newsletters
These are sent out each Friday with the eldest child in each family and contain essential information for parents and carers as well as celebrating children’s successes. They are numbered so please let us know if you have missed one.
Parent and Carer evenings
We hold parent/carer evenings during Term 2 and Term 4 for you to discuss with your child’s progress with their class teacher on an individual basis. There is also the opportunity to talk with your child’s teacher after you have received their annual report in Term 6.
School Website
The school website will be up and running in September. The address is:
The school website has been set up and is maintained by a group children led by Mr. Weenink. The website contains lots of useful information about what your child is learning at school, galleries of work and photos, copies of each week’s newsletter as well as copies of our relevant policies. Please have a look and fill in the guestbook and let us know what else you would like to see on the website.
Parent/Carer Involvement
We welcome the support of parents/carers in the classroom and for out of school activities. Perhaps you have a special skill you would like to pass on to the children; maybe you are interested in what the children do at school all day and would like to come in and work in a classroom for a morning; it could be that you would like to come in on a regular basis and take groups for specific activities such as food or computer activities; or maybe you could spare some time to sort books or tidy the library.
Please contact the school office, your child’s teacher or the Headteacher if you can support us in this way.
Homework
Children receive regular homework and at the start of each academic year you will receive a ‘Supporting Your Child at Home’ booklet which gives details of our homework policy and procedures as well as outlining year group learning expectations.
Special Educational Needs and Inclusion
We aim to provide an inclusive education for all our pupils and to identify any child’s special educational needs as early as possible so that measures can be put in place to meet those needs. This support may take the form of short term focused work with an individual or a group, or longer term work involving other agencies. Where necessary we work with parents and carers to draw up an Individual Education Plan (IEP) to identify specific short term targets for individual children. Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) can be used to work towards these targets with the children. The policies for SEN, Inclusion and Gifted and talented provision are available on request.
Child Protection
The school has a legal responsibility to work with other statutory agencies to ensure that children are safe and secure. We follow Bristol City Council Procedures in relation to child protection issues. A member of the school leadership team has responsibility for child protection issues. If there are any concerns over pupils’ health, safety or welfare the school will do all it can to work in partnership with parents, carers and any outside agencies in the interest of the pupils.
Absences
We ask you to inform the school as soon as possible if your child is absent and follow this up with a letter on return to school. Children should be in school for an 8.50a.m. start to their day. Children who are persistently late often fall behind with their work and can suffer socially by missing opportunities for interaction with others.
If we haven’t heard from you by 9.30a.m, we will contact you to ensure that your child is safe.

Holidays
Any requests for holiday absence need to be made in writing at least a month in advance. Holiday request forms are available from the school office.
‘No parent can demand leave of absence for the purposes of a holiday as of a right’ (Regulation 12, Education Regs, 1981)
School Administration
To run the school efficiently we ask that parents and carers help us by:
· sending all money brought into school sealed in a labeled envelope with the child’s name, class and purpose of the money on the front. This can be handed to the class teacher at registration.
· informing the class teacher or the school office when wishing to collect a child other than at the end of the school day. You will also be asked to sign the ‘Taking a child out of school early’ register when you collect your child.
· entering the school by the front door and reporting to the school office. Any visitors to the school must sign in at reception.
